Service When You Need It

In the event of an emergency, like a county-wide power outage or hurricane, having a cloud-based telephone system prevents interruption to critical communications. For example, when the power went out in Moore County, North Carolina, the blackout didn’t affect the Moore County School system. That’s because they have a cloud-based phone service from Carolina Digital Phone. Even without power, they were able to use smartphones and other geo-redundant technology to keep educators connected to staff, students, and parents remotely.

We take pride in being able to quickly get businesses and schools back online during power outages. Our reliable service ensures that students and teachers can communicate without interruption, even during emergencies.

Our cloud-based telephone service allows school administrators, like those in Moore County, to keep in touch with parents and others via smartphones from remote locations during a power outage. Auto attendants, voice mail messaging and call routing continued to work because Carolina Digital Phone telephone services are not based on the school’s premises. Instead, the system is cloud-based.

How the Problem Started

Over 40,000 Moore County, North Carolina residents were left in the dark on the evening of Saturday, December 3, 2022. According to Moore County and Duke Energy officials, the outages were caused by intentional damage done to two substations in the county.

Officials determined that the recent blackout was caused by targeted attacks on area substations. This has left tens of thousands of people without power and in emergency situations. A curfew is currently being enforced while authorities work to resolve the crisis.

Dr. Tim Locklair, Superintendent of Moore County Schools, announced that schools will remain closed until further notice due to the ongoing power outage. Administrators are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updated information as soon as possible.

As of the writing of this article, Duke Energy reports that crews are working in 24-hour shifts to restore service by early Thursday, December 8th.

Always Prepared

Our team offers geo-redundant cloud-based telecommunications services to schools, meaning that even if the power goes out, communications can still continue without interruption.

Carolina Digital Phone’s geo-redundant cloud-based telephony system was relied on by the Moore County School system, which has over 12,000 students. With the help of remote management tools that allowed for auto attendants, voicemail messaging, call forwarding, and other functions, teachers at Moore County Schools were able to stay in touch with parents and staff during this emergency.

Current Investigation

An investigation into the vandalism at the substations is underway by the FBI, NC State Bureau of Investigations, and local law enforcement agencies, around the clock.

Ryan Phillips, Moore County Directory of Public Safety said during the initial press conference that the Moore County Sportsplex was being opened as a shelter at 4 p.m. on Sunday for those without power.
